<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Several months ago I started using a Google classroom for my art students. Before starting the classroom I deciding to use the stream as a Q&A forum for critique and peer to peer feedback. Through experience doing similar collaboration with Google+ communities I found the open peer to peer sharing was really fueling work and creativity. I created a community for my post graduate level online courses in leadership last Spring as well and all of the students loved it. We were able to get around several questions and help one another quickly in a easy to follow info posting stream. <div>
The collaboration and viewing of artwork intrigued me greatly though. This was profoundly different from a document and comment sharing community open for discussion on topics and ideas. We would be talking about digital images of artwork. NOT the actual artwork itself. This brought me to a key factor to address for the students. They should be aware that we are discussing the image of the work and not the actual work itself. I can only give feedback based on the photograph of the artwork as can any viewer. This is a limitation and a differentiation. This is exactly why all dual enrollment HS students and art school freshmen go why should anybody care about Mark Rothko and Frank Stella? They are looking at little bitty prints inside of a book surrounded by words that are supposed to somehow convey the living meaning and value of a painting that is enormous... 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide... for instance. I have seen Rothko's and Stella's they absolutely stopped me in my tracks and took away my breath. Rothko is much more spiritual and Stella is more industrial, yet they are monumentally astonishing in real life. Details cannot be conveyed through secondary means. This brought me to another debacle. Students like to use photo filters and other quick editing fixes to snaz up imagery. SO what I am critiquing takes on a double life. One as the drawing, painting etc. and another as the digital image of the work itself. Now I have to critique both. People, even my family have looked at me funny when I hold up flashcards for my children and they tell me it is a cow... I say no... It is an image of a cow :] It is crucial early in life to distinguish the difference between what is real... A cow in a field eating vs what is an image of something real. Movies, games television and magazines warp the minds of so many children and adults who live without a simple foundation of what is and what is just an image or a video. Videos are just series of images played in sequence. It takes some doing to get people to understand that concept as well. I suppose a whole lot of thought seeded out of the transition into online teaching and learning. Time seems to change but the principles of relevance stand strong. Rene Magritte said it a long time ago... "This is not a Pipe" or "ceci n'est pas pipe"</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Doug Rickard twists the ideas about voyeurism and appropriation in ways that cut the edge of contemporary photography and the impact of technology on the arts. The images he uses from street view have already been taken by cameras. Some of you might have seen the cameras on top of cars that automatically capture digital photographs as they drive. Every so often street view will be refreshed so the captures Rickard makes are somewhat fleeting and impermanent. Not at the frequency of day to day life, but something less predictable.<br />
So what happens when you take a virtual tour of your favorite town from your desktop; stopping along the way to take a virtual turn and look... and, O wait take a photograph? This is precisely what Rickard did in this series of photographs. It is touchy in terms of plagiarism, but not even close to the same plain as Sherrie Levine in her "After" series except for the fact they are both photographs of photographs. Google street view is open to the public via the internet, and more or less an open invitation for artists to explore. As a photographer, I don't see any real photographic genius behind Rickard's work, but I do see some serious knowledge of photography as well as a very strong eye in terms of selection. His genius lies in the hand picked qualities of his work. Maybe that is photographic genius after all... The body of work feels more like a photo editor setting down and culling thousands while selecting few, much like a curator for an exhibition.<br />
When I just see one image I don't get incredibly excited, but after seeing two more I become ready for the next. If nothing else I certainly think it is a cool idea. I worked briefly as a Google Trusted Independent Photographer or "TIP" and shot some panoramas of outside and inside businesses; linking them to Google's street view. I always had to be mindful of peoples faces, license plates and other sensitive material. If it was captured, then I would have to blur it. My coach from San Francisco actually said I would have to blur images if I photographed the inside of a Marijuana shop. I laughed and told her we don't have those in Louisiana. Back to Rickard, the blurring is done for him, he doesn't have to worry about model releases, sharpening, or various other tedious tasks involved with photography. I am a little envious of the simplicity behind his method. Find images you like, photograph them, print them, sell them. Isn't that what photography is supposed to be about in the first place? Enough of my spill, take a look at slate.com's slides and article <a href="http://www.slate.com/blogs/behold/2013/06/05/doug_rickard_in_a_new_american_picture_a_photographer_examines_american.html">A Portrait of American Life on Google Street View</a></div>

I love the cinematography of <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Michael Slovis, and the set direction & work of the art department including </span><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);">Michael Flowers among the others. Every one of my friends who has a decent background in photography picked up on the purple color scheme..everywhere Marie was. Everyone without any real photography background never noticed the color purple in all of the shots with Marie. That was certainly the most obvious, but Jessie also always seemed to have something red around him. It just seemed more subtle in his case. All of the colors & material in every shot of the show seemed very well planned & framed. It was candy to my photographic eye. I just can't believe people wouldn't notice the purple! It's always with Marie!</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219304523297974337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505769881289791582.post-63856712307552846722014-02-04T20:46:00.002-08:002017-03-28T12:50:06.679-07:00American Dream Part 1<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219304523297974337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505769881289791582.post-7760934455862891122014-02-04T13:52:00.001-08:002014-02-04T20:48:36.374-08:00Sony Products, software/hardware/etc.I couldn't help but address a few things about Sony. The products I am most familiar with are video & audio editing programs. These are in my opinion outstanding! I have to add; in my opinion Sony could be one of the most competitive creative software companies running against Adobe & Corel. Sony programs are highend, high dollar, & high performance. The ones I have used Vegas Pro, SoundForge & Acid Pro have been the easiest as far as learning curve goes. They also are more streamlined and time efficient in regards to that. I can do some projects end to end with Sony in 1/3 or 1/2 the time they take on a Premier Pro & After Effects. In terms of competing with Photoshop, I have not used any Sony photography editing software, but I would like to test drive some.<br />
<div>
Then there is the issue of cameras, file types, compression, and compatability. This is where Sony drops the ball. When I was at the national SPE conference in 2012 Sony had a booth there. I was toeing around the expo and overheard a fellow photog asking the Sony rep about a program that they could use to view AVCHD files on a Mac. He replied, "I'm sorry but I don't know of any." I personally delt with that problem in 2008 when I purchased a Sony AVCHD video camera for a freelance job. My Mac had no idea what these files were. I called Sony and they were dead ended. I did some digging online and found a 3rd party software company in Australia that had created a converter. I don't recal the name offhand , but I purchased a license from them. Cool! Well sortof. Now I could convert to MPEG but the file size grew tremendously & conversion time was not flattering. As long as I kept shots short 1-3 minutes it went pretty well. Still I could not preview a file to make sure I was converting the right clip.... Major let down. Sony would only recommend Sony programs which only work on Windows & an emulator is more bs than it's worth so I lived with it & worked around it. Then years later...While looking for a file viewer I came across VLC media player. Woohoo it would allow me to preview AVCHD on my Mac. I recommend the free download to The fellow photog at the Sony booth & got into a brief chat with the rep. He made a note of the program & politely thanked me for my help.</div>
<div>
Now that is out of the way. What about Sony computers? Everyone I touch I like!! So here is my suggestion to Sony: amazing cameras, amazing software, amazing computers.... So go ahead and create your own OS!!! Why not? Create a operating system for your computers that is performance & creativity based. Mac is falling into a fad of junk apps & slow your day down crap while windows required maintenance and leaves a lot to be desired in the high performance area. If Sony released a super fine ontegratable OS I would be very interested. Hopefully it could cut down the price of there software a little but none the less it could be huge. Could it run as a startup OS seperated in addition to your usual OSX, Win, or Lenox OS. Optimized for performance and editing alone. O my.. I get excited just thinking about something like that. No other programs running..slowing down your computer, and your progress, distracting you from your work. I suppose they could make a more general OS & only use it on Sony computers. This could also be amazing but could be much riskier than the before mentioned as a business move and investment. Either way I think Sony needs an OS all it's own. </div>

No matter how many sunsets there are I will always enjoy photographing them. Even if everyone takes a picture of the sun setting I would enjoy them all. There is something piecful and fulfilling tied to a sunset. At the same time it caries a touch of fear and uncertainty. Could anyone tell a sunrise from the sunset? With only a photograph to go by... Possibly if there was due or frost on the ground, but otherwise I don't think it is possible. Just ment to be enjoyed and retain a climatic memory of a time and place. The fleeting of time, beauty and life all become trapped in a thin slice from everyday life.<br />

I give some credit for this idea to my time spent playing skateboard video games like Tony Hawk pro skater on playstation as a teenager. I would have never imagined that ten years later I could put myself into a game like virtual video as an avatar. This project took a lot of time and had a large learning curve, but it was worth every last hour. </div>

I saw Drive first and then Bronson. I immediately thought the films had a common thread before I looked up the director. The Music, lighting, and cinematography tie together in an unusual way. The manner in which Refn describes main characters is thorough and thought provoking. I found myself trying to relate to characters that are bizarre yet human. I don't usually feel obligated to connect or relate with characters who perform such outrageous acts but Refn brings there human side to the surface in both light and dark ways which allures me.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219304523297974337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505769881289791582.post-6323080630288316412013-12-06T17:35:00.001-08:002013-12-06T17:35:57.127-08:00Ramble on self tenacity and hob-wash...<div>The family photo album becomes a relic. An artifact valuable on its own. after the work of artists like .... Whose to say that The online album or the cellphone album is in anyway inferior. The series depicts her wearing other family members clothes to reference their differences through similarity. I think the simplicity of the work is quite clever. It is relatively straight forward photography work. In this particular example Allen is juxtaposed with her grandfather which reveals some slight physical similarities, such as facial features. For the most part, they do not look alike. By having the exact same camera position which provides the same background is one of the selling point for me. I also like that she takes the extra time to put on the same close as her previous sitter, this alone gives the feeling that something is not right here. Some of the other images, which include her sisters doesn't have the same effect that I get from the clothes in this piece, but the overall theme caries through.</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08219304523297974337noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2505769881289791582.post-31169722864967992642011-12-04T17:39:00.000-08:002011-12-04T19:34:25.972-08:00John PikeI couldn't help but respond like other artist to the horrible wrongdoings of John Pike and others responsible for the tragedy that happened on UC Davis campus. They should keep pepper where it belongs, on food... What a jackass. I hope Pike feels as dumb as he looks!<br />
